Launching Ceremony of Oil exploration in FATA
At last the National Center of Excellence in Geology announced the long awaited project for oil exploration in FATA. In a ceremony held in the hall of National Center of excellence in geology, University of Peshawar, the resource person of the Project Dr. Fazli Rabbi (Associate Professor, specially nominated as the resource person of the project by the Governor NWFP) gave the details of the project. The project is worth 4 crore rupees and will involve intense research. He thanked the present and former Governors of NWFP and his colleagues for their support and keen interest.
Mr Azmat Khan Vice Chancellor University of Peshawar was the Chief guest of the ceremony. He congratulated Dr Fazli Rabbi and the researchers of the center. He said he will help the center in every possible way.
It is important to point out that the presence of all the encouraging geological indicators inn the tribal area for occurrence of oil and gas as elsewhere in the world and the recent discovery of hydrocarbon at the adjoining areas in Kohat and Suleman basin and parts of Baluchistan supported the idea of existence of both the source and petroleum reservoir rocks in FATA.
The project envisages geological investigations and generation of preliminary geotechnical data for hydrocarbon potential in parts of the tribal belt comprising the following three segments.
According to some sources the delay in the project was caused by the Director (on one month leave in USA) NCE in Geology, however the personnel of the NCE in Geology present at the ceremony denied any such allegations and called the report misleading and rumorous.
The project will definitely bring an opportunity to students to research in the FATA area, in a country like ours where research and education has been neglected mercilessly this project is an eye opener for the politicians, it is imperative that they must start such projects and fund universities so that many neglected areas with potential for oil shall be explored.
