Neither is this good governance or bad governance but rather NO Governance

Posted on behalf of sheeraz

KARACHI : As all Pakistanis know nowadays, the prolonged power outages have made lives of the people miserable throughout the country and especially in Karachi which is counted amongst the 10-mega cities of the world. The masses, who are already suffering from a myriad of problems including, inflation, unemployment, a poor law and order situation, judicial crises and others have been given another gift of prolonged load shedding which has been unprecedented even by Karachi standards.

In the past the KESC use to shut the power supply for 2 hours twice a day, but nowadays, the electricity comes on for 2 hour intervals followed by ferocious 8 hour spells of load shedding. And to add insult to injury, the concerned authorities show an extreme deal of efficiency in sending excessive bills to the consumers.

The interesting thing is that when you call at the KESC complaint centre to record your complaint, you will find that the numbers of the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) remain off the hook and if one is lucky, it will keep ringing without anyone attending to your phone call.

Up till now the reality is that the only thing which the consumers have been getting on a regular basis regarding the city’s power crisis is an ample amount of lip service. And regardless of which government is in power, some things never change including the indifference expressed by those at the helm of affairs. For example, it was only last year on June 13th, 2007 to be exact when then Federal Minister for WAPDA, Liaquat Jatoi stated on the floor of the National Assembly that if the privatized KESC does not improve its performance within a year, the government will take it over once again. And now even after another grueling year of unabated load shedding, the problem for the consumers has only increased manifolds. If only our politicians can stick to their words, life would be so different in the Pakistan that we have come to know.

With a new government in power, the same lip service continues and in this regard, the current concerned Minister is the PPP’s Raja Pervez Ashraf who has issued several similar warnings to the KESC to improve its performance but so far all of them see to be falling on the deaf ears of KESC’s management. Ironically, Raja’s last warning seems to have only intensified the problem rather than bringing any resolve to it. And while the people continue to sizzle in the heat and suffer sleepless nights, the democratic government of the day seems more preoccupied in political shenanigans involving the deposed judges and constitutional packages rather than the real problems facing the people who voted for them in the first place. In politics there has always been either good governance or bad governance, but at present we are seeing something totally new which is no governance. And it seems that the KESC is only too well aware of this and continues to play havoc with the lives of Karachi’s citizens.
